From its top-tier exclusive features and one-of-a-kind operating system to what now is a status symbol titled ‘the world’s most powerful personal device’, the iPhone has seen it all. According to Statista, as of the first quarter of 2021, Apple has generated 65.59 billion U.S. dollars in revenue from the sales of iPhones. What started back in 2007 with the launch of the revolutionary first-generation iPhone, the iPhone has not only earned its reputation for being a game-changer but also for its staggering prices on every new release. Let’s breakdown its customer segmentation.

1. Innovators (2.5%)

The innovators are the very first group of individuals to adopt an innovation or technology. These are the kind of people who will try to jailbreak their iPhone and make it remote start the lights in their room the day they’ve bought it. This category of customers loves to experiment and take risks, have high financial lucidity and the closest reach to scientific sources. They’re typically the youngest category of customers.

2. Early Adopters (13.5%)

This is the second fastest group of individuals to adopt an innovation. These are the kind of people who will be quick to ditch their old phones the second a new iPhone model hits the market. Early adopters have good financial lucidity, higher social status, a great deal of knowledge and are typically younger in age.

3. Early Majority (34%)

Individuals in this group adopt an innovation after a varying extent of time. These are the kind of people who will ask the Early Adopters about their experience before buying the latest iPhone in the market. The Early Majority have an above-average social status and financial lucidity.

4. Late Majority (34%)

Individuals in this group will adopt an innovation after the average member of the society. These are the kind of people who will buy an iPhone 7 when iPhone 12 has been released in the market. They are highly skeptical of how the battery drains so quickly and the fact that iTunes is a paid feature but will proceed to buy an iPhone anyway. The Late Majority typically have low financial lucidity.

5. Laggards (16%)

Or as I like to call it, the Siri-Bashers. This is the last category of individuals to adopt an innovation. This category typically includes the older age group of individuals who have no idea how to use 90% features of their iPhone. Although once you enlighten them about the magic of Siri, they will ask it do all of their tasks for them and get mad when they accidentally lock their phone while trying to activate Siri. No one really has a clue how these guys ended up with an iPhone. Laggards tend to be focused on “traditions” and are generally the oldest of all adopters.

Which one are you? Tell us in the comments.

Side note: This customer segmentation is valid all across the tech-industry. In this post, I have simply used iPhone as an example to explain it better.
